Shadow Puppets

Delicately cut from buffalo hide and adorned with paint, cinnabar, and gold leaf, shadow puppets (wayang kulit) are a quintessential Indonesian art form performed by priest-like masters (dalang). These highly learned performers undertake a profound and prodigious occupation, which requires them to study religion, philosophy, ancient literature, and scriptures in both Balinese and the ancient court language of Kawi. In addition to this intellectual rigor, they must have the physical stamina to endure hours-long performances, manipulating puppets and casting shadows created by hot oil lamps while flawlessly impersonating numerous voices and characters. While this art form is undoubtedly entertaining, it is also a vital means of inculcating Balinese principles and culture in the younger generation.
