Lontar Palm-leaf
Dimensions: 37.5 x 4 cm
Every subak owns an independent, unique awig-awig charter, comprised of clauses that were collectively agreed upon by its members. Written on lontars, a type of palm-leaf manuscript, awig-awig is revered as an object of worship.
All members of a subak must govern themselves in accordance with the rights, responsibilities and obligations defined in the rulebook. If they violate them, they are sanctioned according to the consensus reached in a meeting.
Translated Passage: Sanctions should be imposed. If someone plants before the appropriate time and continues to do so incessantly, they should be fined accordingly—an amount of 1,600 kepeng (traditional currency), calculated as half-seeds. Also, regarding behavior in the fields and all matters related to planting, when supervision is ready, the Pekaseh (Subak leader) should instruct the patrol groups circling the subak to provide assistance. Each group, once ordered by the Pakaseh, is obliged to mobilize efforts to perform masambang (night watch)."
