Money Art
Manufactured in China, large quantities of small copper coins have been imported into Java and Bali since at least the 14th century. These coins are round with square holes in the center and bear Chinese characters indicating the emperor and dynasty during which they were minted. They served as a convenient form of currency in Bali well into the 20th century until they were replaced by modern money. Despite this, they continue to play an important role as an essential and obligatory element of Balinese offerings, where they are known as sesari—literally, 'essence'. In addition, they are used to create statues and temple decorations, as seen here. The pair of temple hangings representing Lord Wisnu and his wife, Dewi Sri, are rare examples of this art.
