Rice, a staple of Balinese culture, embodies Tri Datu, the three sacred colors of balance. Barak (Red) represents strength and vitality, seen in beras (red and white rice). Putih (White) symbolizes purity and offerings, found in ketan (glutinous rice). Selem (Black) signifies wisdom and the unseen forces of nature, embodied in injin (black rice).
Together, they reflect the harmony of life and agriculture within the subak system.
At the center, kacang-kacangan (legumes, including peanuts) mark a restorative phase between harvest and the next planting season. Beyond enriching the soil, this period honors Dewi Sri, Goddess of Rice and Fertility, allowing her to recover after the labor of harvest—a sacred pause before the cycle of life begins anew.
